HELPING YOUR TWEEN DISCOVER WAYS TO MANAGE
WHATEVER LIFE THROWS AT THEM

Sometimes life as a tween feels unfair, filled with too many rules, too many ‘have-to’s’ and adults telling them ‘no.’ Many tweens feel scared they aren't good enough, fearful of trying new things, and of making mistakes.

As a parent of a tween, perhaps you can relate: your child still needs your help with so many things but also is asking to do things themselves. Maybe it's hard to see how unmotivated they are at times, how misunderstood they feel, and how they care so deeply about what their friends think of them.

Watching your tween struggle is hard. You want to help them but often your attempts seem to make things worse. They aren’t kids anymore. And yet, they aren’t quite teens either. This ‘in between’ time often feels overwhelming and confusing for both parents and the tween.

Overwhelmed Tween? Do The Following Challenges Sound Familiar?

Do any of the following sound like your tween?

  • They feel like everyone is better at things than them.
  • They don't say what they want, because it feels like no one listens anyway.
  • They have big emotions and find it difficult to communicate how they feel.
  • They worry about lots of different things and want to avoid school.
  • They compare to others, especially about screen time limits, bedtime, and phone use.
  • They argue and sneak when they disagree with the rule you set.

The tween years can be an overwhelming time for your child, for you, and the entire family. Even when they are having a bad day, you love them unconditionally. It’s possible for your tween to feel better.

Navigate Life Challenges With Ease

Tween therapy helps your tween rise above their challenges, stand tall in who they are, and transform into their truest selves.

Your tween will get the tools they need to uncover strengths and ways to manage their stress.

Even if they are not usually comfortable opening up, tween therapy may be able to help them…

I've helped tweens who are struggling with change, who feel overwhelmed by big emotions, and who feel less than or worried, be more in control of their emotions and actions. My tween clients learn to ask for the freedom and independence they crave while also accepting the support and guidance their parents are offering.

My name is Della Pope and I am a family therapist and I’m here to help.

How Tween Therapy Works

Tween Therapy consists of 50-minute, one-on-one sessions that help you work through your concerns. In addition to listening, I will ask questions and guide you towards solutions. I play an active role. Here’s how it will work step-by-step:

  1. First, I provide a safe, accepting space where both you and your tween can share your struggles with me.
  2. I'll use games and other activities to build a strong therapeutic relationship with your tween, so that they can tell their story even when words fail them.
  3. Together we will set specific goals for therapy.
  4. Keeping these unique goals in mind, we will make a plan for our sessions together: sometimes just your tween and I will meet. Other times you and your tween will participate in the session. This is a collaborative process where your input and the input of your tween are essential.
  5. Over the course of our sessions, your tween will start building self confidence and coping strategies that will help them throughout their lives. And you will feel confident in your ability to support them.

Research shows that therapy for tweens can positively change their thinking, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors. It can help you and your tween let go of what’s holding each of you back.
